Today was tough. The war is taking its toll, and politics is creeping into places it shouldn\u2019t be\u2014into conversations, decisions, and even between people who are supposed to be on the same team.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was exhausting. It was toxic. It was unnecessary. It didn\u2019t belong.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly the kind of thing I refuse to let into my startup.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

As a founder, I keep asking myself: <\/span>How do we build the right culture? How do we filter the first hires, co-founders, investors, legal teams, and financial partners to make sure they align?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Because one thing is clear: I don\u2019t want politics and small-mindedness in my house.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Power of the First People You Bring In<\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Every startup has a DNA, and it\u2019s written by the first people in the room. They set the tone, define the culture, and make sure the company stays focused on building, not on unnecessary noise.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

This is why early hiring isn\u2019t just about skills\u2014it\u2019s about mindset. I\u2019d rather have a slightly less experienced team member with the right attitude than a \u201csuperstar\u201d who thrives on internal drama.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Filtering Out the Noise<\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Politics and toxicity rarely announce themselves at the door. They creep in through vague red flags, through \u201cgray areas\u201d in behavior, through people who seem brilliant but operate with hidden agendas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

So how do you filter them out? Here are a few tactics that help:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  • The alignment test:<\/span> Ask candidates and investors direct questions about their values. How do they handle disagreements? What do they do when conflicts arise?<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The \u201ccoffee spill\u201d test:<\/span> See how they react to small, unexpected inconveniences. How someone treats a waiter or an intern says a lot about how they'll behave under pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The ego check:<\/span> Do they listen, or just wait for their turn to speak? Are they open to feedback, or do they get defensive?<\/span><\/li>\n
  • The long-game question:<\/span> Do they focus on the company's long-term mission, or just on short-term wins for themselves?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Creating a Politics-Free Culture<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    You can\u2019t prevent every problem, but you can create an environment that discourages the wrong behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

      \n
    • Radical transparency<\/span> \u2013 When information flows openly, there\u2019s less room for backroom politics.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Clear principles<\/span> \u2013 Not just a \u201cculture deck\u201d that gathers dust, but real, enforceable rules on how decisions are made.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Zero tolerance for toxicity<\/span> \u2013 One toxic person, no matter how skilled, can erode an entire culture. Fast.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      With everything happening in the world, it\u2019s easy to get distracted. But as founders, our job is to keep our team aligned, our mission clear, and our company moving forward\u2014without letting external chaos turn into internal dysfunction.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
