There are decisions you make in a startup\u2014and then there are <\/span>the<\/span> decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Who joins your founding team. Which investor you say yes to. Who you partner with on a key rollout.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

These are not product tweaks or office logistics. They shape your trajectory.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And while I\u2019ve built frameworks, due diligence processes, and checklists to support them\u2026 in the most critical moments, I\u2019ve learned something strange:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Your gut knows before your brain catches up.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Call it instinct, intuition, subconscious pattern recognition\u2014whatever you like. But when things go sideways, it\u2019s almost always because I ignored that quiet voice inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That was the theme of my last few weeks. We\u2019re hiring. Fundraising. Building partnerships. Some decisions felt amazing on paper\u2014and terrible in my gut. Others looked risky\u2014but I <\/span>knew<\/span> they were right.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

So I stepped back and distilled 10 tips that have helped me stay clear-headed (and gut-connected) during high-stakes decisions:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Slow Down to Speed Up<\/span> The bigger the decision, the more silence it deserves. Urgency is not your friend here.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Sleep on It\u2014Twice<\/span> Real alignment doesn\u2019t fade overnight. If it still feels right after 48 hours, you\u2019re closer to clarity.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Test the \u2018Coffee Test\u2019<\/span> Would you <\/span>want<\/span> to meet this person for coffee once a week for 3 years? If not, don\u2019t work with them.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Notice Tension<\/span> When your stomach tightens or your shoulders tense, that\u2019s feedback. Pay attention before logic overrides it.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Call the 'No-BS' Friend<\/span> The one who doesn\u2019t care about optics, and always asks: \u201cWhat are you <\/span>really<\/span> afraid of?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Revisit Your 'Why'<\/span> Will this decision move you closer or further from your founding purpose?<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Track Your Gut Record<\/span> Look back at the last 5 major decisions. When you trusted your gut, how did it play out?<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Default to People, Not Paper<\/span> A beautiful pitch deck means nothing if the founder or partner feels off.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Say It Out Loud<\/span> If you can\u2019t explain your yes (or no) in one sentence\u2014pause.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Visualize the \u2018Regret Test\u2019<\/span> Imagine it's a year later and this didn\u2019t work out. Will you regret saying yes\u2014or not saying no?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Ultimately, great founders aren\u2019t just smart. They\u2019re self-aware. And that means building decision-making muscles <\/span>beyond logic<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
