A colleague challenged me this week: <\/span>"Try leading your processes like a guided tour."<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At first, it sounded abstract. But it stuck.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

In every pitch, product meeting, or investor call\u2014there\u2019s a beginning, a middle, and an end. The question is: <\/span>Who\u2019s deciding where we\u2019re going?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Too often, I realized, I was assuming we\u2019d \u201cget there\u201d eventually. But that\u2019s not how great outcomes are created. They\u2019re led.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Organized Tour Model<\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Think of a guided tour: You meet your group. Set expectations. You tell a story. You move. You rest. You deliver \u201cwow\u201d moments. And you end with a clear sense of what was experienced\u2014and what it meant.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Great leaders do the same:<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

 <\/p>\n

    \n
  • They <\/span>open strong<\/span> \u2013 framing the journey.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They <\/span>set tempo<\/span> \u2013 when to go deep, when to move on.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • They <\/span>design the destination<\/span> \u2013 instead of hoping one shows up.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    So what\u2019s the map?<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Let\u2019s take a startup investor meeting. Here\u2019s what <\/span>not<\/span> to do: Start with your deck. Go deep into the product. Lose the room in minute 12.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \n

    Here\u2019s what to do instead: <\/span>Start with a promise.<\/span> "Let me show you why this category is about to explode." <\/span>Build momentum.<\/span> Share the shift, the insight, the wedge. <\/span>Create tension.<\/span> \u201cThere\u2019s a huge gap\u2014and here\u2019s how we\u2019re the only ones solving it.\u201d <\/span>Resolve with clarity.<\/span> \u201cWe\u2019re raising X to go from Y to Z. Here\u2019s the plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    It\u2019s not manipulation. It\u2019s <\/span>structure<\/span>. It\u2019s <\/span>design<\/span>. And ironically\u2014it creates more <\/span>authentic<\/span> conversations, not less.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    A moment in 3D<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    This week I caught myself midway through a call. I was mid-sentence when I realized: <\/span>I\u2019m not leading this meeting. I\u2019m following.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \n

    That one realization shifted my tone. I paused. Reframed. Said: \u201cLet me share where I think this is going\u2014tell me if it lands.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

    The mood changed. The outcome did too.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \n

    Not because I forced it\u2014but because I finally gave the room a map.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    So what?<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \n

    People want to be led. They want to know that someone is taking responsibility for the destination. Even if it changes\u2014<\/span>clarity is what creates safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \n

    And in business, safety opens wallets, minds, and momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

     <\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    10 Tips to Lead Like a Tour Guide<\/span><\/h3>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \n

     <\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Open with a destination.<\/span> Don\u2019t ask: \u201cHow can I help?\u201d Start with: \u201cHere\u2019s where I think we can go.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Use contrast.<\/span> \u201cHere\u2019s where most people get it wrong\u2026 and here\u2019s what we\u2019re doing differently.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Create 3 beats.<\/span> Think in threes: Problem \u2192 Insight \u2192 Plan.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Build anticipation.<\/span> Drop hints. \u201cI\u2019ll share the big unlock in 3 minutes.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Frame the map.<\/span> \u201cLet\u2019s spend 10 minutes on context, then dive into the solution.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Pause to reorient.<\/span> Say: \u201cHere\u2019s what we\u2019ve covered so far. Here\u2019s where we\u2019re going next.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. Own the tempo.<\/span> Speed up or slow down depending on their reactions\u2014but stay in the driver\u2019s seat.<\/span><\/li>\n
    8. Show before you tell.<\/span> Use visuals, stories, demos\u2014make it real before you explain it.<\/span><\/li>\n
    9. End with meaning.<\/span> Not just \u201cany questions?\u201d But \u201cWhat\u2019s standing out to you from this?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
    10. Leave them curious.<\/span> A good tour doesn\u2019t tell you everything. It leaves you wanting more.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
