Day 408 of 1095: Asking the Big Questions That Define Our Startup’s Existence

Recently, my co-founders and I paused the daily grind—tasks, responsibilities, sprints—and began assembling the bigger puzzle: What are the essential questions that justify our startup’s existence?

Every early-stage company faces this reckoning. If you don’t consciously define your existential questions, the market will do it for you. Brutally.

Here are some of the big questions we’re working to answer:

 

  1. Product-market fit — Does our solution resonate with today’s market realities?
  2. Founder endurance — How much personal runway do we each have, emotionally and financially?
  3. Customer validation — Who is truly ready to pay for our solution, not just praise it?
  4. Capital strategy — How much funding will we need next quarter, and what’s the clearest path to secure it?
  5. Key hires — Which role should be our first critical recruitment?

 

And beyond that, here are five additional questions we believe every startup should confront:

 

  1. Differentiation — What makes our solution unmistakably different from competitors?
  2. Scalability — Can we efficiently grow our solution without linear cost increases?
  3. Sales repeatability — Can we close new customers in a predictable, repeatable way?
  4. Timing risk — Are we too early, too late, or just in time for this market?
  5. Cultural foundation — What cultural DNA are we establishing that will shape our team as we grow?

 

These questions aren’t just strategic. They’re existential.

Answering them won’t happen overnight. But not answering them guarantees overnight failure.

So we’ve made this our priority. We’ve cleared space for deep thinking, debate, and honest reflection. The answers will come. Some will be tough. Some will evolve. That’s the process.
