Today was one of those crazy, jam-packed days where you're hopping from one place to another, meeting people, and wrapping it all up with a weird sense of satisfaction (Hakuna Matata, right?).

Somewhere in the middle of all this, I had a simple yet powerful realization. I spent part of my day with people I genuinely enjoy being around. The kind of people you’d say, "Hey, let’s grab a beer or coffee next week," and actually look forward to it.

And then it hit me: this isn’t just nice—it’s essential. It’s a rule, an unwritten one, but foundational for any successful startup team.

The “Let’s Grab a Beer” Rule

Startups are like roller coasters. There will be exhilarating highs, frustrating lows, and those middle-of-the-ride moments when you wonder why you even got on.

When you’re on that ride, the people sitting next to you matter more than you think. They’re not just the smartest or most skilled—they’re the ones you trust, the ones you want to learn from, and yes, the ones you can imagine laughing (or commiserating) with over a drink after a tough day.

For me and my team, this connection isn’t just about camaraderie—it’s about mission alignment. Our purpose is to help trauma survivors and security personnel build resilience and grow from their experiences. This isn’t just work—it’s a shared journey that requires trust, understanding, and mutual support.

Great teams aren’t just built on resumes or IQ scores. They’re built on relationships. Shared goals, yes, but also shared humanity. When you enjoy spending time with your team, even outside the office, it translates into better collaboration, communication, and resilience during tough times.

So, here’s a question to ask yourself about your own team—whether you’re in a startup, a corporate setting, or any project:

Would I enjoy grabbing a beer (or coffee) with these people?

If the answer is yes, you’re likely on the right track.
